San Paolo (Sao Paolo) is one of the largest world megalopolis, with 10.997.000 habitants, about 20,000.000 considering the agglomerate urban of San Paolo, Capital of the homonym State. It raises on a tableland at a medium height of 760 m above sea level, on the right bank of the river Tietè, among the harbour of Santos and the fertile southern centre regions.

Grounded in 1554 by the Jesuits of Manual da  Nòbrega, it will become the most important City of Brazil and the basis of departure of the “bandeirantes”, who in the XVII and the XVIII centuries left for the intern at the research of gold and diamantes.
In 1761 it will become the Capital of the “capitania”; it was the point of departure of the independence national movement, and for so much, that in his nearby, the hill of Yparanga, was proclaimed independent in 1822.

The town planning structure of the City is very modern, in as much it had to adapt to receive a great number of immigrates and to face up at a remarkable population increase. The centre of the City is understood between the big arteries of the Rua Direita, Rua Sao Bento and Avenida Paulista: there are the public and government buildings, important banks and elegant shops.

One of the attraction poles of the City is the Park of Anhangabaù, by his sides there are the Town Hall Theatre and the Hotel Esplanada. In the oriental part (Bras, Mooca, Tatuapé) and in the western  part (Santana, Tucuruvi, Villa Maria) are the popular and industrial quarters, in two of these quarters, Bixiga and Mooca, lived until not long ago the Italian Community, today all over the City, in fact nearly the half of the habitants have at least one Italian ancestor. In the occidental and southern part there are the elegant quarters (Boa Vista, Pacaembù, Higienàplois, Perdizes, Villa Nova Conceicao, Itaim Bibi, Moema, Morumbi, Jardins Alphaville, and Pinheiros).
