Val Paraiba: a cidade cultural e o Santuario

It stands in the High Valley of the Paraiba. In 1745 for giving hospitality to the imagine of the Madonna, there was built a first Chapel, but since 1955, seeing the arriving of the pilgrims from all South America which are estimated around the 7 million, there was build a new Sanctuary. The imagine, in earthenware, of the Madonna Aparecida was found in the river Paraiba in 1717 and restores from the damages that with the time it had undergone and immediately the local population thought to construct a Chapel for receiving her. The fame of the Madonna was spread quickly in the country. In 1894 arrived the Redeemer Fathers that took cure of the Sanctuary and in 1928 she becomes Patron and Protector of Brazil. The too little Church became insufficient for the numerous Pilgrims and there was conceived a new Sanctuary, which works ended in 1980 with the Consecration made by the same Pope John Paul II. In 1984 it is officially National Sanctuary.
There are interesting the feasts of the 12th October, with at least 100.000 parishioners and the Feast of Saint Benedetto.
